RWE Renewables has made a final investment decision for its 1400MW Sofia project in the UK North Sea.
The developer said the project represents a total investment of around £3bn and said it will start onshore enabling works at the project this spring.
Offshore construction is due to start in 2023, with the project due fully operational by the end of 2026.
RWE UK country chair Tom Glover said: “Through this decision, we strengthen our commitment to growing and investing in renewable energy in the UK and to playing a significant part in helping deliver the UK’s ambition to grow offshore wind capacity to 40 gigawatts by 2030.
“Today’s milestone and the achievements to come represent successful collaboration with the local, regional and national supply chain, and the local communities with whom we are committed to continuing to work.”
RWE said it will shortly finalise the preferred supplier agreements that are already in place for all of Sofia’s key packages.
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is lined up to supply 100 of its 14MW offshore wind turbines to the project.
A consortium of GE Renewables and Sembcorp Marine will supply two HVDC convertor stations for the project and Prysmian will supply and install the HVDC export cable system for the project.
